Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Starting with a fully heated air fryer helps the tater tots crisp evenly and develop a golden exterior.
Arrange the tater tots in a single layer in the air fryer basket or tray and cook until crispy, flipping them halfway through, about 8 minutes total. Avoid overcrowding so the tots stay crunchy instead of steaming.

Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the hot tots, then layer on the cooked steak, onions, and green bell pepper. Adding the toppings while the tots are hot helps everything heat through quickly.

Return the loaded tots to the air fryer and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, just until the cheese is fully melted. Keep a close eye on them so the toppings don’t overcook.
Remove the tots from the air fryer, drizzle with Alfredo sauce, sprinkle with green onions, and serve immediately while hot and crispy.
Chef Jenn’s Tips
- Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper first before air frying then you can just lift out the parchment paper with all the tots on it.
- You can make your own Alfredo sauce or just use a jar.
- For the best ooey and gooey cheese, shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese is coated with an anti-clumping powder which also stops it from melting really well.
- Ensure your tots are really crispy before topping them or they’ll get soggy quickly.
